One result of this expedited training was the loss of numerous aircraft during training missions in the Gulf of Mexico. Many of those inexperienced pilots were quickly processed through an accelerated flight-training program. Navy was eager to train as many young pilots as possible. Navy's ‘Cradle of Aviation’, the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida has been a fundamental aviation training ground since the beginning of the 20th century. ![]() ![]() This article summarizes the Hester Lake expeditions and provides a case study for future underwater archaeological work at high-altitude and remote locations using ROV technology. The research goals of this expedition were to: (1) systematically survey the entire lake bottom and the boulder field above Hester Lake to gather information needed to evaluate the site's eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places, and (2) establish a baseline methodology for documenting underwater archaeological sites in high-altitude wilderness areas with small ROVs. Building upon the lessons learned from 2015, a new research permit was submitted to the National Park Service in 2020 to return to Hester Lake and perform a more thorough underwater and land survey of the locality. Due to time constraints and the capabilities of the ROV technology, only one quarter of the lake's bottom was surveyed. During this preliminary expedition, a small terrestrial survey and multiple ROV dives were conducted to identify and document the main body of wreckage. In 2015, a team of researchers packed underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) into the backcountry of Kings Canyon National Park to explore the wreckage of a World War II B-24 bomber at the bottom of Hester Lake. ![]()
